Organize a "Pick it Up" litter campaign project. Free "Pick It Up" bags are available, and when full, are picked up with your other garbage. No trash stickers needed! Contact HAND to register your individual, business or organization's project.

1.  BLOOMINGTON IDOL

Tuesday, January 5

This is....Bloomington Idol! We're looking for someone who has what it takes to become the first Bloomington Idol. Contestants show us what they can do during auditions on January 5th and 6th at the Bloomington Convention Center. Those awarded golden tickets have the chance to perform live on January 15th at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The person with the most and highest votes wins cash prizes and an opportunity to perform at the Blue Bird and Peoples Park.

Duties: Stage left, stage right, you're in, you're out, you're on! A lot goes into finding Bloomington's top performer. Volunteers assist with registration, auditions and calculating votes.

Program Time:

Tuesday 3:30-9:30 p.m.

Wednesday 3:30-9:30 p.m.

Friday 5-11 p.m.

Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.

Location: City of Bloomington Convention Center 302 E. College Ave. and Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave.

Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up

Number of Volunteers: 6-10 per day

 

2. BLOOMINGTON IN BLOOM - RED, WHITE AND U KICKOFF - A MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SERVICE DAY PROJECT

Monday, January 18 - Prep Day

Bloomington in Bloom is a city-wide initiative encouraging community members to play a role in making Bloomington a better place to live, work and visit. We are encouraging individuals and groups to recycle, plant trees, volunteer, display flowers, compost, pick up litter, remove graffiti, garden - because beautifying Bloomington starts with you!

Duties on Monday, January 18 - Prep day: Martin Luther King Jr. is perhaps the most notable community organizer in the United States. On this day, volunteers learn about the Bloomington in Bloom campaign, prepare materials for the spring neighborhood blitz, stuff thousands of door hangers with Bloomington in Bloom materials, seed packets, and promotional items, and become an advocate for a clean, sustainable, and involved Bloomington.

Program Time: 9 a.m. - Noon

Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.

Location: City Hall/Shower's Building - 401 N. Morton St.

Age of Volunteers: 12 yrs. and up

Number of Volunteers: January 18-25 vol.

 

 

 

* ONGOING SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

 

1. BLOOMINGTON DEVELOPMENTAL AND SKILLED LEAGUE YOUTH BASKETBALL - SEASON 2

January 20-April 3

The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department offers two basketball programs in their newly acquired Twin Lakes Recreation Center. The Developmental League focuses on building self-esteem, teamwork and developing the basic fundamentals of basketball. The Skilled League is for the child who can already dribble, shoot and pass. Both seasons includes weekly practices and games. The seasons conclude with an honors banquet. Join us for the satisfaction of playing in a fun and positive setting where everyone learns the game of basketball.

Duties:  We are looking for coaches who can commit to once-or twice-weekly practices and one game per week or weekend. Time and day of practices are determined by the coach. Volunteer coaches will enjoy making a difference in the lives of kids and can help develop our next big IU basketball star. (We suggest two coaches per team.)

Timeline: Prospective coaches must sign up by Monday, January 4, and must attend one of the following information sessions:

Tuesday, January 5, 6 p.m.

Thursday, January 7, 6 p.m.

Coach selection process completed by Thursday, January 14.

Mandatory coaches training on Wednesday, January 20, 6 p.m. or Thursday, January 21, 6 p.m. at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center.

Program Time: Coaches plan and lead one or two one-hour practices per week and one, one-hour game per week or weekend.

Location: City of Bloomington Twin Lakes Recreation Center, 1700 W. Bloomfield Rd.

Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up

Number of Volunteers: 85

Other: Returning coaches and parents have first priority for placement.

 

 

2. BANNEKER AT THE VIEW

Once a week, January 5-May 21

Help local youth interested in learning new things, experiencing different activities and having an all-around great time in our after-school program. This program also includes built-in tutoring time, arts and crafts, and snacks daily.

Duties:  Whether you enjoy working with youth or have professional aspirations to, this service opportunity gives you hands-on experience. Assist staff in implementing a variety of children's activities.

Program Time: 3-6 p.m.

Training: Volunteers are required to attend an orientation prior to the program.

Location: Fairview Elementary School, 627 W. Eighth St.

Age of Volunteers: 16 yrs. and up

Number of Volunteers: 4-6 per day, Monday-Friday

Other: We ask that you commit to at least one day a week for the duration of the program season.

Kim is the chairperson for Community sub-committee and is Special Services Coordinator for the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. This position falls within the community relations area of Parks where she manages the volunteer and sponsorship programs.  She has extensive experience organizing community volunteers, recruiting more than 1300 volunteers on a yearly basis for Park programs and events.  Kim is a graduate of Leadership Bloomington Monroe County (LBMC) and has served on the LBMC Alumni Board for the past 5 years. With a strong interest in the nonprofit sector, Kim is a member of the Non-profit Alliance for Monroe County (NPA) and serves on their Networking and Training Committee. Kim’s yard is certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the Wildlife Federation, and she’s very excited to play a role in the Bloomington in Bloom initiative.
